The Carlisle Bar - The Food Blogger Cocktail & Tapas Degustation

The Carlisle Bar
Address: 2 Kellett Street, Potts Point NSW 2011
Phone: (02) 9331 0058

Carlisle Bar is conveniently located a few minutes’ walk from Kings Cross station so I didn’t get too wet from Sydney’s ever changing weather. Upon arrival, we were greeted by cute waiters and champagne – cheers to weekday drinking!

The newly renovated bar is divided into a few sections, with 3 tables on one side and a few more at the end of the bar which can be used as a VIP area.

On the tables, there were sharing plates of Tortilla chips with fresh avocado, coriander chilli and fresh lime, Carlisle Plate with trio of dips, marinated olives, feta, crusty bread and pita and Vegetarian Teasers: chargrilled eggplant, zucchini, capsicum, marinated artichokes, semi-dried tomatoes, olives with pita and crusty bread. The dips and feta were tasty!

After mingling with other bloggers for awhile, Bonnie told us that our 4 course tapas and cocktail degustation will be served soon. Also, they have also smartly organised for all the food that are served that evening will be downstairs for photographic purposes.

Homemade Haloumi grilled and topped with grape and balsamic reduction
Their haloumi is made by an 86-year-old Greek grandmother who only distributes it to three people in Sydney and The Carlisle Bar’s executive chef Chrys Xipolitas being one of those! We were told that her haloumi is made with real milk and not milk powder so it’s smoother than usual.

I love my haloumi with hers not being overly salty, this easily became my favourite dish for the evening! The balsamic reduction made the dish very moreish.

Clover Club – Aviation gin, lemon, raspberry, egg white. Sweet and Sexy

The cocktail looked innocently sweet, but one sip into it, I’m glad I decided not to drive and used the Uber service that was provided. I love the spices in this drink and if you don’t like having cocktails because it’s too sweet – this is the drink for you.

Lightly Floured & Fried Prawn Cutlet – served with three dipping sauces:
sweet chilli plum, soy teriyaki and wasabi aioli
Eastside Fizz – Beefeater gin, lime, mint, Perrier water

The prawns were succulent and cooked perfectly. Didn’t get to try the sweet chilli plum sauce as it wasn’t served to us. The wasabi aioli tasted like normal mayonnaise but it was delicious none the less.

Gotta love a fizzy drink and this was easier to finish than the Clover Club as the alcohol content doesn’t seem to be as strong.

Spicy Chicken – Marinated spicy chicken thigh fillets, marinated in the
chef’s secret sauce and BBQ-ed
South of the Border – Tequila, Mezcal, passionfruit, lime and Vanilla
The chicken was nicely cooked but it would be better if there was a bit more sauce (we weren’t served with sauce, it was only downstairs for photography purposes).

LOVE LOVE LOVE this cocktail because of the smoky Mezcal!! I first tried Mezcal at El Topo and I loved it ever since J Like the Clover Club, this cocktail was quite strong and I couldn’t really taste the passionfruit.

Beef Tenderloin – Rolled in mixed peppers, BBQ’d and served medium rare
with a bourbon jus and garlic crisps
Blood & Sand – Chivas, Cherry & Herring, Antica Formula, Ardbeg, Fresh Orange
MMm.. that beef! It was so tender and it just melts in your mouth, I wanted to ask if I could have seconds hehe. I also like the crunchiness of the garlic crisp.

The accompanying cocktail was again, strong and I personally enjoy Chivas on the rocks rather than in a cocktail.

I love the decor of the bar and they've divided the bar where private conversations can be held in a group. I would come back here for after work drinks and to try out their other cocktails. And of course, to have their haloumi again!

Next Stop: Food was invited to The Food Blogger Cocktail & Tapas Degustation at The Carlisle Bar. All comments are based on my own opinions. Thanks Bonnie for the invitation and the Uber service arrangement.

  1. Dear Feli,

I don't normally drink cocktails but I had about 6 of that Clover Club which I thought went pretty well with the prawns.
