Must Try: #hastag Brown and Salted Caramel Thickshake

Feli and I were both very delighted to check out this café, with a name like this you can only be curious what it has to offer. With such a unique name followed an interesting menu. We could not resist and we had to order the Pulled Duck, #Hashtag Browns and a wonderful find of
thickshakes, of the Nutella OR Salted caramel flavour. Yum!

As we waited for our food, we got the opportunity to meet the owners Ella and Ibby. Both with a strong passion for food and service. They told us they love going out to eat and it has inspired them to open their own café. Ella and Ibby worked on the menu items personally with their chef. Some of the dishes are their own creations and the chef created the rest. Cuckoo Callay has been opened for 8 months now and is easy to find, right outside the Newtown train station. They have a window for take away, but if you have the time to sit down, you should definitely try their food.

First we were given the thickshakes, Feli wanted to try the Nutella and I wanted to try the Salted Caramel. I highly recommend coming here and try the Salted Caramel thickshake, I took my first sip and it tasted like a lolly in my mouth. It was so good, very sweet, but delicious.

Salted Caramel Thickshake $7

Nutella Thickshake  $7

Next, our food arrived and it looked like an amazing plater of scrumptious proportion. The Pulled Duck came alongside baked potatoes, lentils and chilli jam. The (not spicy) jam really tied the meal together and each bite was tasty and full of flavour. The duck itself was tender and a great all round dish.

Pulled Duck - Pulled Duck, Sauteed Potatoes, Green Lentils,
shaved Asparagus, poached egg and spiced chilli jam  $22

The #Hashtag Browns, what a good looking dish! This is on their breakfast menu and it did not disappoint. I had chosen bacon as my option for this dish (you can choose Salmon or Haloumi). The chef prepared the dish especially for us to also try with their cured Salmon. The hash brown was in the centre of it all and we were told to mix the hash brown with the flavours surrounding it.
This was absolutely delicious and the avocado was just a great combination with the hash brown.

#Hashtag Browns  -   Crispy Potato Hash Brown, Poached Egg, Pea Puree,
Avocado and the choice of Bacon, Salmon or Grilled Haloumi  $17

Time for Dessert, Ibby recommended that we order the Brownie (with macadamia nuts) and ice cream. They also suggested the Carrot cake with Strawberries. The Brownie was absolutely delicious with ice cream, so bad, but so good. The Carrot cake was very good, the lime mascarpone surprisingly accommodates the carrot cake and makes a yummy combination.

That's The Way The cookie Crumbles  -  Home Made Triple Chocolate Brownie
With Ice Cream, Cream and Crumbed Biscuit  $11

Carrot Cake with Lime Mascarpone

Feli then also ordered a Chemex Coffee. Made from African Beans, this coffee was served black and in a wine glass. Cuckoo Callay creates their own house blend and the coffee was fruity and full of flavour.

 Chemex Coffee $5
To finish of the meal we were then told about the design for the café. Each logo and design had a specific purpose and hidden messages. They got a graphic designer to create their logo, and if you see close enough there is a tea cup inside the bird. They got another graphic artist to create a mural of Ella and Ibby in Newtown. If you look in the top left corner you can see the cartoon sketches of the owners.

The interior of the café is very stylish and chic. The colours are wild, yet inviting and there is also a large cuckoo clock (in the centre of the cafe), true to the name, it rings on the hour every hour. The mirror also creates the illusion that you can see the outer ring in its entirety.

Next time I will definitely try their Cuckootails (cocktails), they look yummy! This place was fantastic and I recommend everyone to go and try their breakfast menu and the thickshakes (must try that salted caramel thickshake!).

Until next time!

All comments are based on my own opinions. A warm thank you to the owners Ella and Ibby for the invitation.

  4. Looks like the combination of egg porn and location make it worth visiting. I've been contemplating it, but wanted someone else to see what it was like first. Mission accomplished!
